Choose a method from the question's conditions before opening feedback. Work without notes first, then explain which restriction or evidence determined your answer. These are original instructional questions, not an adaptive test or a predictor of an official score.

An economic historian used surviving advertisements to estimate the availability of imported cloth in a port. The number of advertisements increased after a tariff reduction, suggesting greater trade. But advertisements measure sellers' efforts to attract buyers, not quantities sold. More intense competition could increase advertising even if imports remained stable. The historian therefore compared the advertisements with warehouse records. Both sources rose in the same years, strengthening the trade interpretation. Their agreement is useful precisely because the two records arise from different activities and are vulnerable to different distortions.

Engineers tested a coating that reduced heat absorption on roof tiles. In a laboratory, coated tiles stayed cooler under a lamp than uncoated tiles. A field trial found a smaller difference. Dust had accumulated on both surfaces, and the coated roofs were shaded for part of the day. These conditions do not invalidate the laboratory result; they change the circumstances under which it is applied. For a building owner, the relevant question is not simply whether the coating works under ideal conditions, but how much benefit remains under local conditions and what maintenance is needed to preserve it.
