Arc length and distance travelled

Distance travelled is speed accumulated: $\int \sqrt{(dx/dt)^2 + (dy/dt)^2}\,dt$, the same formula written $\int \sqrt{1 + (dy/dx)^2}\,dx$ for a graph — and never the same thing as the displacement unless the path is straight.
