| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| count on | Keep counting from a number you know. |
| next | The number said just after this one. |
Say six. Now say seven, eight, nine. You kept counting without going back to one. The order stays the same wherever you begin. Six is the starting place, not the first new step. Touch a finger for each new number you say.
Another way: steps
Start: 6. One step: 7. Two steps: 8. Three steps: 9.
Put eight counters in a cup. Add one: say nine. Add another: say ten. Check by tipping out the counters and touching each once. Both ways give ten. Did you count eight as a new counter? Keep the starting count separate from the new steps.
