Count through new tens and reach one hundred.
Count to twenty. Listen for the change from nineteen to twenty before trying a later ten.
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| ones | Single counting steps. |
| ten | A group of ten ones. |
By ones, say every next number. By tens, add a whole group of ten: ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety, one hundred. Use the chart to keep your place. Move along a row for ones. Move down one cell for ten more.
Another way: picture
Each row contains ten numbers. The last cell is one hundred.
After twenty-nine comes thirty. After thirty comes thirty-one. At a row's end, move to the next row's first cell, not to the cell directly below. Say sixty-nine, seventy, seventy-one. Check each spoken number against its cell. Ninety-nine needs one more to reach one hundred. Counting by tens skips numbers; counting by ones does not.
Finish the current ten.
38, 39, 40
One more after thirty-nine is forty.
Begin the next run.
41, 42
After a full ten the ones continue.
Add the next ten.
80, 90
The step is ten, not one.
Reach ten full tens.
Count by tens. Fill the gap.
