Count once, organize a group and record how many.

Paper packet. Every task here also exists on screen, where it is checked automatically; answers written on paper are not assessed by Nydus. When you are back at a device, enter your answers there.

1. What you will learn

Count up to twenty things without skipping or double-counting.

2. Our words

TermWhat it means
collectionThings we count together.
totalHow many things in the whole collection.

3. One touch, one word

Touch each object once and say one number word. Keep a finger at your starting place. Count along the top row before moving to the next row. The last number you say tells how many objects are in the whole collection, not just in its last row.

4. Move them and check

Count twelve counters, then spread them farther apart. There are still twelve: none arrived or left. Try counting from the other end. The total should agree. If it does not, move each counted counter into a new pile. For a larger collection, circle ten first and count on for the extras. Do not count the circled ten twice.

5. Count the stars in this picture.

  1. Count the first row. [Twelve stars in two rows of six]

    1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

The first row has six stars.

  2. Continue through the last row.

    7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12; total 12

The next six stars belong to the same collection.

6. Count ten counters and five more.

  1. Keep the full group.

    10

The first ten are already counted.

  2. Your turn: work this step out. Its working is at the end of the packet.

    Count the remaining five.
