Flat shapes and solid shapes

Name solids, flat shapes and the outlines on faces.

Paper packet. Every task here also exists on screen, where it is checked automatically; answers written on paper are not assessed by Nydus. When you are back at a device, enter your answers there.

1. What you will learn

Tell a solid from a flat shape and describe a face.

2. Shape words

TermWhat it means
solidA shape with depth.
faceA flat surface of a solid.

3. Object or outline?

A circle is flat. A sphere is a solid like a ball. A square is flat. A cube is a solid block with square faces. We draw solids on flat paper, but the drawing stands for an object with depth. Name the object, not just the paper.

Another way: picture

[Cube with square faces] [Sphere with a curved surface] A cube has flat faces; a sphere curves all around.

4. Look from another side

Turn a cube and find its six square faces. Some were hidden before you turned it. A cylinder has two flat circular faces and a curved side. A cone has a circular base and narrows to a point. A sphere has no flat faces. Compare these models gently on a tray. Flat triangle pieces can join to make a square outline; that does not make them a cube.

5. Name a box-shaped block and its face.

  1. Look at the whole block.

    cube

The model has depth and six equal square faces.

  2. Follow just one face.

    square

Its flat outline has four equal sides and square corners.

6. Describe a round ball.

  1. Turn the model slowly.

    Curved in every direction

    No flat face appears.

  2. Your turn: work this step out. Its working is at the end of the packet.

    Name the solid shape.

7. Guided practice

Which shape describes a ball you can turn in your hands?

Audio transcript: None

8. Guided practice

Which names the flat outline around one face of a cube?

Audio transcript: None

9. Practice

A cube has six flat faces. A sphere has no flat faces. Record their flat-face counts.

Cube: c. Sphere: s.

Audio transcript: None

10. Somewhere new

A builder uses a cube for a base, a cone for a roof and two flat triangles to cover a square sign. Which account fits all three parts?

Audio transcript: None

11. Lesson test

Lesson test: one question per skill, one attempt each, no hints. Your answers are checked when you submit.

12. Test question

Record the flat-face counts of a cylinder and a sphere.

Cylinder: c. Sphere: s.

Audio transcript: None

13. What you can do now

Describe a ball and the outline around a coin. Which is a sphere and which is a circle?

Working for the steps left to you

6. Describe a round ball., step 2

sphere

A flat circle cannot describe the whole solid.
