Making bigger shapes

Fit pieces without gaps and recognize the combined outline.

Paper packet. Every task here also exists on screen, where it is checked automatically; answers written on paper are not assessed by Nydus. When you are back at a device, enter your answers there.

1. What you will learn

Turn and join simple shapes to build a new shape.

2. Building words

TermWhat it means
composePut pieces together to make a shape.
overlapPut part of one piece on top of another.

3. Watch the outside

Put two equal square tiles side by side. Match one whole edge. No piece covers another and no space remains between them. Trace the outside with a finger. The new outline is a rectangle. The line where the squares meet is inside the shape, not part of its outside boundary.

Another way: picture

[Two squares joined into a rectangle] Two square pieces make one longer rectangle.

4. Turn a piece to fit

Cut a paper square along a corner-to-corner line. The two pieces are triangles. Turn one around, then fit them back together along the cut. A rotated piece has not changed its size or shape. Check the outer boundary for gaps. Count pieces separately from outside corners. Two pieces can make a shape with four corners; piece count and corner count answer different questions.

5. Build a rectangle from two squares.

  1. Match one whole edge. [Two square tiles form a rectangle]

    □ beside □

The equal edges fit without a gap.

  2. Trace around both tiles.

    One rectangle; two pieces

The middle join is not an outside side.

6. Rebuild a diagonally cut square.

  1. Find the two cut edges. [Square split diagonally into two triangles]

    Two triangles

These edges came from the same cut.

  2. Your turn: work this step out. Its working is at the end of the packet.

    Turn and fit them.

7. Guided practice

Two equal square tiles share one whole side. What is their outside shape?

Audio transcript: None

8. Guided practice

Match each fitted set to its outside shape.

rectanglesquareregular hexagon
Two equal squares side by side
Two halves of a diagonally cut square
Six equal equilateral triangles around one point

Audio transcript: None

9. Practice

A path uses 4 equal square tiles with no overlap. How many square pieces were used?

Answer:

10. Somewhere new

Two triangles came from cutting one square along a corner-to-corner line. One triangle is now turned. What must you do to rebuild the square?

Audio transcript: None

11. Lesson test

Lesson test: one question per skill, one attempt each, no hints. Your answers are checked when you submit.

12. Test question

Two square tiles join along one full edge. Record pieces and outside corners.

Pieces: p. Outside corners: c.

Audio transcript: None

13. What you can do now

Join two square tiles. How many pieces are inside, and what shape is the outside outline?

Working for the steps left to you

6. Rebuild a diagonally cut square., step 2

One square
