Sorting into groups and counting them

Sorting by a property, counting each group, and saying which has most.

Paper packet. Every task here also exists on screen, where it is checked automatically; answers written on paper are not assessed by Nydus. When you are back at a device, enter your answers there.

1. What you will learn

In this lesson you sort things into groups, count each group, and say which group has the most.

2. Get ready

Match things that share a feature. Count each thing once, even when the things have different sizes.

3. Sorting words

TermWhat it means
categoryA group that follows the rule.
mostThe group with the greatest count.

4. Choose one sorting rule

Put toy cars together and toy buses together. The rule is kind of vehicle. Count each group separately. A large bus is still one toy, just like a small car. Make one mark for each toy to save the counts in a picture graph.

Another way: picture

Cars: ● ● ● Buses: ● ● Each dot stands for one toy.

5. Change the rule

The same toys can be sorted again by color. A red car and a red bus now belong together. The group counts can change, but no toy is added or lost. Check that every toy has one place under the new rule. Line up marks from the same starting edge so you can compare groups fairly.

6. Sort three cars and two buses.

  1. Separate the two kinds. [Three car counters and two bus counters]

    Cars: 3; buses: 2

Each toy goes in the group named by the rule.

  2. Match toys across groups.

    One car is left over

    Three is more than two.

7. Two red cars and one blue car: sort by color.

  1. Use color this time. [Two counters for red cars and one for a blue car]

    Red: 2; blue: 1

All are cars, so kind would make just one group.

  2. Your turn: work this step out. Its working is at the end of the packet.

    Check the whole collection.

15. What you can do now

You can sort, count and compare. After sorting shapes by color, how do you find which there are most of?

Working for the steps left to you

2 + 1 = 3

Sorting has not changed the number of toys.
