Working out that a story is about some going away.

Paper packet. Every task here also exists on screen, where it is checked automatically; answers written on paper are not assessed by Nydus. When you are back at a device, enter your answers there.

1. What you will learn

In this lesson you listen to a story where some go away, and work out how many are left.

2. Get ready

Count a group within ten. Move the counters carefully without counting any of them twice.

3. Story words

TermWhat it means
subtractTake a part from an amount.
leftThe part that stays.

4. Watch what stays

Six ducks sit beside a pond. Two swim away. Show six counters, then slide two away. Count only the counters still beside the pond: four. The two that moved away are part of the starting six. Do not add them again. Taking away is called subtracting.

Start: ● ● ● ● ● ●. Move away: ● ●. Left: ● ● ● ●.

5. Tell it backward to check

Join the part left with the part that went away. Four ducks left and two away make the starting six. If the parts do not make six, rebuild the story. Sometimes all the ducks leave: then zero remain. If none leave, the count stays six. Always ask what the question wants: the starting ducks, the leaving ducks or the ducks left.

6. Five crayons are here. Three go into a bag.

  1. Move three from five.

    5 - 3

The bag takes part of the starting group.

  2. Count what stays outside.

    2; check 2 + 3 = 5

Both parts rebuild the starting five.

7. Four cars are parked. All four leave.

  1. Move every car away. [Four counters representing the cars before they leave]

    4 - 4

All of the starting group leaves.

  2. Your turn: work this step out. Its working is at the end of the packet.
