Paper packet. Every task here also exists on screen, where it is checked automatically; answers written on paper are not assessed by Nydus. When you are back at a device, enter your answers there.

1. What you will learn

Connect a teen collection, a full ten-frame and its written numeral.

2. Place words

TermWhat it means
teen numberOne of eleven through nineteen.
extra onesThe ones outside the full ten.

3. A ten is ten ones

Fill every place in a ten-frame. You have ten ones. Put four more counters outside it. Count on: eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen. Write 14 for the whole amount. The 1 stands for the full ten; the 4 tells about the extra ones.

A full ten-frame with ten counters, followed by four extra counters outside the frame.

Ten counters fill the frame; four counters stand outside it.

4. Take it apart and rebuild

Remove the four extra counters from fourteen. The ten stays full. Put them back and fourteen returns. Writing 41 would describe a different amount; digit order matters. Eleven and twelve have special names, but each still contains a ten and extra ones. Nineteen has nine extras. One more would fill a second ten, making twenty, which is no longer a teen number.

5. Build sixteen.

  1. Make the full ten.

    10 ones

The ten-frame must be completely full.

  2. Add six outside it.

    10 + 6 = 16

    Six extra ones complete sixteen.

6. Take twelve apart.

  1. Keep the full ten.

    10

A teen contains one full ten.

  2. Your turn: work this step out. Its working is at the end of the packet.
