1. What you will learn

Follow the paths of six through nine and write ten with two digits.

2. Writing words

TermWhat it means
loopA path that closes around a space.
digit orderWhich digit is written first, then next.

3. Notice where the loop goes

Six has a lower loop in the shown style. Nine has an upper loop and a tail below. Eight has two loops. Seven has a top and a sloping stroke. Trace each path from its marked start. Keep the page upright so the direction stays clear.

Another way: picture

[Six] [Nine] Compare a lower loop with an upper loop.

4. Ten needs two digits

Ten is written 10: one ten and zero extra ones. Write the 1 first and the 0 beside it. Do not place one digit above the other. Count ten counters to check what your label means. Then copy the numeral on blank paper without tracing. Ask an adult whether it can be read. Practice slowly; clear form and the right amount matter more than speed.

5. Write ten for a full ten-frame.

  1. Name the grouped amount. [Full ten-frame]

    1 ten; 0 extra ones

A full frame contains ten counters.

  2. Place the digits beside each other.

    10

Their order records the ten before the extra ones.

6. Write six, then compare it with nine.

  1. Follow the lower loop.

    6

Six's loop is below the upper stroke.

  2. Your turn: work this step out. Its working is at the end of the packet.
