1. What you will learn

In this lesson you count a group of things and write the number that says how many.

2. Get ready

Touch each counter once as you count. Move counted counters aside if you lose your place.

3. Our words

TermWhat it means
numeralA written number.
digitOne symbol, such as 1 or 4.

4. Save the count

A numeral is a written number. Count the things first. Write the last number you say so someone else can know the amount. The numeral describes the whole group, not just the last thing you touched. An empty group has zero things. Write 0 for that group.

5. Read two digits together

Fourteen is written 14. The 1 tells about a ten; the 4 tells about four more ones. Do not write only 4. Twenty is 20, with no loose ones. Put the written label beside the group. Recount to check the label. Spreading the same counters out does not change their number.

6. Write a label for thirteen counters.

  1. Count the whole group.

    10 and 3 more

    Every counter must be included.

  2. Write the two digits.
