Counting to five

Count to five and keep track when objects move, join or leave.

Paper packet. Every task here also exists on screen, where it is checked automatically; answers written on paper are not assessed by Nydus. When you are back at a device, enter your answers there.

1. What you will learn

Count every thing once and tell how many altogether.

2. Words to hear

TermWhat it means
JoinBring groups together.
SeparateMove a part away from the rest.

3. Count all the way to five

Touch and say one, two, three, four, five. Give one word to each object. If the objects are scattered, move each counted object onto a mat. Stop when all are counted. The final word tells how many are on the mat; it is not just the name of the last object.

Another way: picture

Before: four blocks in two rows of two. After moving: the same four blocks in one spread-out row.

Count the blocks before and after the move. The arrow is not a block.

4. Moving is different from adding

Four blocks stay four when spread apart. If another block joins them, there are five. If you take one away from five, four remain. Keep the removed block outside your counting group. To check a joining story, count both parts together, not just the new part.

5. Toy picnic

Count a place for each toy guest. If another guest arrives, add one place and count again. Slide the plates closer and check that the total stays the same.

6. Join two and one

  1. [Three block counters]

Put one new block with two blocks.

    ● ● ●

The new block belongs in the total.

  2. Count all the blocks.

    Three altogether.

    Both parts have been included.

7. Take one away from four

  1. [Four counters for blocks]

    Cover one block counter.

    One removed block.

It no longer belongs to the group.

  2. Your turn: work this step out. Its working is at the end of the packet.

    Count the blocks left uncovered.
