Patterns and sorting

Distinguish sorting into groups from repeating a pair in order.

Paper packet. Every task here also exists on screen, where it is checked automatically; answers written on paper are not assessed by Nydus. When you are back at a device, enter your answers there.

1. What you will learn

Find the little part that repeats and use it to continue a pattern.

2. Words to hear

TermWhat it means
RepeatDo the same part again.
OrderWhich comes first and which comes next.

3. A pair that comes again

A pattern follows a rule. Circle, square, circle, square repeats the pair circle, square. Say that pair together each time. To continue, begin the pair again after it finishes. Sorting is different: a pile of circles and a pile of squares has groups, but it does not yet show a repeating order.

Another way: picture

The bars show the ends of complete repeats; they are not beads.

4. Use the whole pair

A pattern can use sounds, movements or small groups. Clap, tap, clap, tap repeats two actions. One stone, two stones, one stone, two stones repeats two group sizes. Before filling a gap, find a whole pair with nothing missing. Then use its order at the gap. Copying only the last thing breaks the pattern.

5. Movement game

Invent clap, tap with a partner. Stop after a clap and invite the partner to finish the pair. Pointing or movement can explain the rule without written words.

6. Continue circle, square

  1. Point to a complete pair.

    ○ □

Both shapes are in the repeat.

  2. Put another pair after it.

    ○ □ ○ □

    The order stays the same.

7. Continue one dot, two dots

  1. Find the two group sizes.

    1, 2

Each group has a different amount.

  2. Your turn: work this step out. Its working is at the end of the packet.

    Build one more complete pair.

8. Guided practice

Keep this bead pattern going: ○ □ ○ □ ○ __. Which shape comes next?

Audio transcript: None

9. Guided practice

The pattern is one dot, two dots, one dot, two dots. How many dots belong in each missing group?

● | ●● | ● | ●● | a dots | b dots

Audio transcript: None

10. Practice

Continue the dot-group pattern: two dots, four dots, two dots, four dots. Enter the next two amounts.

●● | ●●●● | ●● | ●●●● | a dots | b dots

Audio transcript: None

11. Somewhere new

A toy path repeats a three-stone group and a one-stone group. Fill the missing group amounts.

●●● | ● | a stones | ● | ●●● | b stones

Audio transcript: None

12. Lesson test

Lesson test: one question per skill, one attempt each, no hints. Your answers are checked when you submit.

13. Test question

A toy parade repeats two flags, then three flags. Extend the pattern with two more groups.

14. What you can do now

Show the repeating pair in a new pattern, then add a complete new pair in order.

7. Continue one dot, two dots, step 2

1, 2 again.

A new pair restarts the rule.
