1. What you will learn

Today we match the number shapes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 to groups of things. Each number shape says how many.

3. A label for an amount

A numeral is a written number. The card 2 can label two blocks, two cups or two claps. It does not name the kind of thing. Count the things first. Then find or enter the numeral that tells how many. A big printed 2 and a small printed 2 both mean two.

4. Keep the amount

Place a 3 card beside three toy cups. Move the cups into a triangle. The same card still belongs there because no cup was added or taken away. Do not choose a larger numeral just because the cups are farther apart. Count to check when you need to.

5. Tidy-up labels

Make a number label for a tray of toy dishes. An adult may read the directions, but let you count and choose the numeral. Check the label again after a dish is removed.
