Writing 1, 2 and 3

Follow numeral models and connect the marks with small quantities.

Paper packet. Every task here also exists on screen, where it is checked automatically; answers written on paper are not assessed by Nydus. When you are back at a device, enter your answers there.

1. What you will learn

Follow the path for 1, 2 and 3, then connect a numeral to how many.

2. Words to hear

TermWhat it means
TraceFollow a shown path.
CurveA line that bends.

3. Follow a number path

Numerals are marks that stand for amounts. In this model, 1 begins with a short slant and continues down a long straight line. The 2 curves at the top and ends across the bottom. The 3 has two curved bumps. Follow the whole model slowly. A small part of a numeral may look like another numeral, so check its ending too.

The tracing activities show the actual paths and starting points.

4. Check your mark

Look for a missing part or a mark far away from the path. Try again gently rather than pressing harder. You can first draw the motion in the air or on large paper. Tracing is supported practice. It does not show that you can write the numeral without a model, and that is all right.

5. Make a label

Count toy blocks and choose a numeral label. Practice tracing it. An adult can observe an untraced attempt separately; never record independent handwriting from a successful trace alone.

6. Follow this 1

  1. Find the start and slant upward.

    Short slant to the top.

    We follow this model's form.

  2. Continue down to the end.

    1

The long line completes the numeral.

7. Finish the 2

  1. Follow its top curve.

    The rounded beginning.

    The model guides the turn.

  2. Your turn: work this step out. Its working is at the end of the packet.

Continue down and across the bottom.

8. Guided practice

12. Somewhere new

A toy shop needs a label for these two boxes: □ □. Which numeral belongs on the label?

Audio transcript: None

13. Lesson test

Lesson test: one question per skill, one attempt each, no hints. Your answers are checked when you submit.

14. Test question

Number-meaning check: a label shows 3. How many toy blocks belong with that label? Enter the amount; this does not test handwriting.

Answer: blocks

Audio transcript: None

15. What you can do now

Point to where your numeral starts and show how its complete path matches the model.
