Counting to ten

Count up to ten things and use a ten frame to organize the count.

Paper packet. Every task here also exists on screen, where it is checked automatically; answers written on paper are not assessed by Nydus. When you are back at a device, enter your answers there.

1. What you will learn

Today we count up to ten objects, checking that every object gets exactly one counting word.

2. Counting words

TermWhat it means
AltogetherThe whole amount.
Ten frameTwo rows with five spaces each.

3. One touch, one word

To count a collection, choose a place to begin. Touch one object and say one. Move to another object and say two. Continue in order until each object has one word. The last word tells how many altogether. If you lose your place, start again or move counted objects to a separate space. Counting quickly is less important than counting each object once.

[Ten frame]

Count dots, not empty boxes.

4. A frame helps organize

A ten frame has two rows of five spaces. Put just one counter in each space. A full top row shows five; continue into the bottom row. The frame can hold ten, but it does not always contain ten. Empty spaces tell where another counter could go. They are not part of the count.

5. Supply tray

Count pretend seeds onto a tray. Spread them apart and count again. Explain why a different arrangement should give the same total if none arrived or left.

6. Five and one

  1. [Six dots]

    Notice the filled top row.

    Five dots.

One dot fills each top space.

  2. Count the bottom dot.

    Six altogether.

It adds one to the five.

7. Continue from five

  1. [Eight dots]

    Use the full top row.

    Start with five.

    The top row is complete.

  2. Your turn: work this step out. Its working is at the end of the packet.

    Include the bottom dots.
