Longer patterns, and sorting with counting

Continue and repair repeated groups, then use patterns in a toy neighborhood.

Paper packet. Every task here also exists on screen, where it is checked automatically; answers written on paper are not assessed by Nydus. When you are back at a device, enter your answers there.

1. What you will learn

Today we find the whole repeating group, preserve its order and repair a missing place.

2. Pattern words

TermWhat it means
UnitThe smallest group that repeats.
RepairRestore a missing or misplaced part.

3. Repeat the whole group

A repeating pattern copies a group in the same order. Circle, square, square repeats three places even though it uses only two shape kinds. Call this smallest repeating group the unit. To continue, find your place inside the unit. To repair a missing card, compare it with the same place in a complete unit.

The bars separate complete units, not individual shapes.

4. Different rules

Patterns keep order. Sorting groups matching kinds. Split five into one and four, or two and three; rejoin.

5. Human-reviewed neighborhood task

Build a neighborhood with 6–10 counted objects, a repeated border and two positional directions. Explain counts and the unit; revise when a guest arrives or a pattern piece changes. The adult records name, date, support and observations. Score counting, pattern, directions and revision: 0 not yet, 1 with mathematical help, 2 independently. Require 2 in each area; give feedback and a fresh retry otherwise. Reading prompts or gestures are allowed. Screen scores cannot verify performance.

6. Three different kinds

  1. Read the complete group.

    ▲ ● ■.

Three different kinds repeat in order.

  2. Continue after ▲ ●.

    Next is ■.

The third place is still needed.

7. Repair a unit

  1. Compare ▲ ● ● with ▲ __ ●.

    Middle places match.

Both copies use the same order.

  2. Your turn: work this step out. Its working is at the end of the packet.

    Restore the missing place.

8. Guided practice

Continue this repeating border: ▲ ● ● | ▲ ● ● | ▲ __. What comes next?

Audio transcript: None

9. Guided practice

Starting from the first shape, which smallest group repeats in ■ ▲ ▲ ■ ▲ ▲ ■ ▲ ▲?

Audio transcript: None

10. Practice

The row is ● ■ ■ ● ■ ■ ● ■ ■. How many places are in its smallest repeating group?

The unit has places places.

11. Somewhere new

A toy path repeats dot cards: [● ●] [●] [●] [● ●] [●] [●]. Record the dot count on each card in the smallest repeating group, then the count on the next card.

Unit: second card

12. Somewhere new

Repair a toy border: [● ● ●] [●] [●] [● ● ●] [missing] [●]. Then split FOUR counters two ways: one left and the rest right; two left and the rest right. Complete each record.

13. Lesson test

Lesson test: one question per skill, one attempt each, no hints. Your answers are checked when you submit.

14. Test question

Continue the card amounts: 1, 2, 3 | 1, 2, 3 | 1, __, __.

Next card: second dots. Following card: third dots.

Audio transcript: None

15. What you can do now

Show the smallest repeating group in your pattern and explain how it tells you what comes next.

7. Repair a unit, step 2
