Today we read 9 and 10, matching the entire numeral to the amount it names.
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Digit | One written mark used in a numeral. |
| Ten | The amount after nine in counting. |
Nine is written 9. In this print it has a loop at the top and a line going down. Ten is written 10: a 1 followed by a 0. Read those two marks together as ten. Do not count the written marks to decide how many objects the numeral names. A label with two marks can describe ten objects.

Point to the whole numeral as you say its name.
Nine fills five spaces in the top row and four in the bottom. One space remains empty. Ten fills both rows completely. Adding one dot to nine makes ten. When you write the label for ten, keep both digits in order. Leaving out the zero changes the number; turning 9 around does not keep its meaning either.
