3. A mark that names an amount

A numeral is a written number. Six is written 6, seven is written 7, and eight is written 8. In this print, six has a lower loop, seven has a top and a slant, and eight has two loops. Those shapes help you recognize the marks. To check what a mark means, make or count a matching collection.

4. Check the label against objects

A full row of five counters is a helpful starting part. Add one for six, two for seven or three for eight. You can also count every object from one. If a label and collection disagree, count again before changing either. A numeral stays the same size even when the objects are large or spread apart.
