Where things are

Describing positions relative to another object through pictures and play.

Paper packet. Every task here also exists on screen, where it is checked automatically; answers written on paper are not assessed by Nydus. When you are back at a device, enter your answers there.

1. What you will learn

Today we give directions using above, below, beside, inside, behind and in front.

2. Direction words

TermWhat it means
ReferenceThe thing whose place we compare with.
InsideWithin a boundary.

3. Compared with what?

A position word needs a reference: the thing we compare with. A ball can be above a box but below a shelf. Above means higher than the named thing; below means lower. Beside means next to it. Inside means within its boundary. Name the reference before deciding where the ball is.

Another way: picture

An outlined square house with a red marker above, a blue marker below, a green marker inside and a black marker beside it.
An outlined square house with a red marker above, a blue marker below, a green marker inside and a black marker beside it.

Use the square house as the reference for each marker.

4. Moving in space

Put a toy in front of a chair, on the side facing you. Move it behind the chair, farther from you. It may be hidden there. These directions need a shared viewpoint. Ask your partner where they are looking from if the instruction is unclear.

5. Partner directions

Give a partner a box and a soft toy. Ask for a place beside it, then inside it. Check the result together. Let your partner give a new direction and name the reference.

6. Find a relationship

  1. Ball inside
