Writing one, two and three

Trace 1, 2 and 3 with a finger, pick them out, and match them to amounts.

Paper packet. Every task here also exists on screen, where it is checked automatically; answers written on paper are not assessed by Nydus. When you are back at a device, enter your answers there.

1. What you will learn

Today we follow complete numeral paths for 1, 2 and 3 and connect each mark with an amount.

2. Writing words

TermWhat it means
StrokeA connected mark before lifting.
BaseThe bottom part of a mark.

3. Follow the whole path

A numeral is a mark for an amount. Our model of 1 starts with a short slant and then goes down. The 2 bends over the top, travels down toward the left, and finishes with a flat base. The 3 has two rounded bumps. Look at the ending as well as the beginning so that you do not confuse two similar marks.

The tracing activities show starting dots and the exact paths to follow.

4. Practice gently

Follow one numbered path at a time. These three models each use one connected stroke. Start slowly rather than pressing harder. If a part is missing, find where the path should continue. You can practice the motion in the air or on large paper first. Tracing supports the movement; it does not prove you can write without a model.

5. Basket labels

Count one, two or three pretend books. Make a label and ask an adult to compare it with your intended numeral. Record whether you traced, copied or wrote without a model.

6. Inspect two

  1. Look at this model: 2.

    Curved top, flat base.

    Both parts identify the numeral.

  2. Follow to the end.

    Complete 2.

    The base must be present.

7. Inspect three

  1. Look at this model: 3.

    Upper and lower bumps.

    They share one path.

  2. Your turn: work this step out. Its working is at the end of the packet.

    Check the finished mark.

8. Guided practice

Which numeral has a curved top and finishes with a flat line along the bottom?

Audio transcript: None

9. Guided practice

Follow this model of 1: start with its small upward slant, then continue down the tall line.

10. Practice

Make the path of 2: curve over the top, travel down toward the left, then finish along the bottom.

2

11. Practice

Make 3 by following both rounded bumps without stopping at the middle.

12. Somewhere new

A toy-library basket holds these three books: ▯ ▯ ▯. Type its quantity label. This checks the label's meaning, not handwriting.

Books in the basket: label.

13. Lesson test

Lesson test: one question per skill, one attempt each, no hints. Your answers are checked when you submit.

14. Test question

Number-meaning check: a kit contains a toy spoon and a toy fork. What numeral records how many tools are in the kit?

Answer: tools

Audio transcript: None

15. What you can do now

Show where a numeral begins, how its path continues and how you check that no part is missing.

7. Inspect three, step 2

Both curves present.

A single bump would be incomplete.
