    Maps, scale, direction and location

    Unit

What a map is — a drawing made from straight above, with a key that says what each symbol stands for and an honest account of what has been left out; which way is which, from the four compass directions to reading a north arrow that does not point up the page, and following a route in order; how to say where something is, by grid square, by the place it sits inside, and by land or water on a globe; and how far that really is, from reading a scale bar to turning map centimeters into kilometers and back. It ends by asking the maps themselves when they were drawn and who drew them.

    Physical and human patterns

Where things are in the world and why. Latitude and longitude to fix any place, and what every flat world map stretches; the water cycle, rivers and their basins, rock broken and carried away, the plates that shake and build the land, and the biomes that follow the climate; where people live, how settlements grow, what cities do and what moves between places; and how people turn nature into resources and change the places they live, for better and for worse. Every lesson uses real places and real, dated figures, and the course ends by asking what evidence an explanation of a pattern really needs.
